| Additional information |
Gibraltar's football-themed crown series of the early 1990s was issued partly as a commercial play on the territory's passionate local football culture and partly to capitalize on the lead-up to the 1996 European Championship. The Gibraltar Football Association, founded in 1895, had long sought UEFA membership — a bid that would remain blocked until 2013, with Spain's federation a persistent opponent throughout.
KM#235a is the silver proof variant of a base-metal circulation type, produced for the collector market rather than any sporting body or official commemoration.
