Reverse description The reverse commemorates the 70th Platinum Wedding Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the upper portion of the field, the conjoined initials E and P flank a central Royal cypher surmounted by a crown, all rendered in high relief. Below this, a large rectangular panel occupies the central field, bearing a photographic reproduction of the couple's official 1947 wedding portrait after Alexander Bassano, depicting Princess Elizabeth in her Norman Hartnell wedding gown and veil alongside Prince Philip in naval dress uniform. The lower segment of the reverse is framed by a decorative horizontal bar, below which the numeral 70 is prominently displayed, flanked on either side by scrolled ribbon banners inscribed STRENGTH and STAY, referencing the words of King George VI's toast at the couple's wedding breakfast.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 70th wedding anniversary of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip — the first platinum wedding anniversary ever reached by a British monarch — this Gibraltar crown is one of dozens of commemoratives the territory produced for royal milestones throughout the queen's reign. Gibraltar's prolific commemorative output from this period was commercially driven, with many issues sold directly to collectors rather than released into general circulation.
