Issued to mark Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee — her 70th year on the throne — this piece uses the Machin portrait, the first of five official effigies used during her reign. Arnold Machin's design, introduced in 1968, became the longest-running portrait on British coinage before being succeeded by Raphael Maklouf's effigy in 1985. Tower Mint, operating as a private mint rather than the Royal Mint, produced this for the commemorative market. Gold-plated copper-nickel crowns of this type are struck in substantial quantities and see essentially no circulation.
