| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a faithful high-relief reproduction of the world's first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black of 1840, rendered in rectangular form occupying the central field of the coin. The stamp design features the left-facing diademed portrait of Queen Victoria within an ornate engine-turned border with latticed corner ornaments and decorative side panels. The word POSTAGE appears in the upper label of the stamp design, while ONE PENNY appears in the lower label, flanked by the corner letters A on each side, faithfully replicating the original stamp format. |

The Penny Black, issued in May 1840, was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system — a direct consequence of Rowland Hill's 1837 pamphlet proposing a uniform penny post regardless of distance. Gibraltar has long exploited its status as a British Overseas Territory to issue commemorative coinage targeting the collector market, and this 2015 gold crown falls squarely in that category. The 175th anniversary of the stamp's introduction provided the occasion.
