Reverse description Central design reproduces, in high relief, a faithful numismatic rendition of the world's first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black of 1840, engraved by William Wyon. The stamp vignette depicts the young Queen Victoria as a diademed and draped bust facing left, surrounded by the ornate engine-turned latticework background and decorative corner stars characteristic of the original stamp. The word POSTAGE appears at the top of the stamp panel and ONE PENNY at the base, flanked by the check letters E and F; the numeral 1 appears in the lower tab. The surrounding legend reads PENNY BLACK along the left and ANNIVERSARY along the right, with 150th at the top and CROWN at the bottom of the broad outer ring, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the stamp's issue.
