The Isle of Man's authority to issue its own coinage independent of the Royal Mint gave the Manx Treasury unusual latitude to produce speculative precious-metal issues throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. This 1980 Moscow Olympics crown was part of that commercial program — struck in platinum at a moment when the metal's investment profile was attracting serious collector interest, and when most sovereign mints still considered platinum coinage an exotic novelty. The U.S. and U.K. had no platinum bullion or proof programs yet.
Mintage figures for the platinum variant were never formally published by the Pobjoy Mint, which struck the issue under contract.
