The Isle of Man's annual cat crown series, launched in 1988 by the Pobjoy Mint, was one of the first recurring coin programs to treat domestic cat breeds as a standalone collectible theme — a format that proved commercially influential enough that several other small-denomination issuers followed within a decade. The Norwegian Forest Cat selection in 1991 carried some cultural weight: the breed had only received formal FIFe international recognition in 1977, after Norwegian breeders spent years lobbying to distinguish it from ordinary domestic longhairs.
The .999 fine silver version shares its KM number suffix with the base metal issue, a cataloging quirk that still causes confusion in dealer lots.
