Struck by the Pobjoy Mint for the Isle of Man to mark the 931st anniversary of the Conquest — an oddly arbitrary commemoration, but the 1990s produced no shortage of these. The Norman Conquest angle was well-trodden numismatic territory by 1997, with the 900th anniversary in 1966 having generated far more significant issues across British territories.
Pobjoy held a long-running contract for Isle of Man coinage and regularly issued crown-sized pieces on historical themes with limited collector demand and generous mintages.
