Nefertiti's image has circulated on commemorative coinage from multiple issuing authorities since the 1970s, largely on the strength of the Berlin bust — excavated at Amarna by Ludwig Borchardt's team in 1912 and controversially retained in Germany despite Egyptian requests for repatriation that continue to this day. Gibraltar's use of the subject in 1997 reflects the broader Commonwealth commemorative boom of the late 1990s, when small Crown dependencies issued themed series aggressively targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
