Gibraltar's "Prehistoric Man" commemorative series ran through the late 1990s, drawing directly on the territory's own fossil history — a Neanderthal skull discovered at Forbes' Quarry in 1848 predates the Neander Valley specimen that gave the species its name, though Gibraltar's find received far less scientific attention at the time of discovery. That skull, now held in the Natural History Museum in London, remains one of the most complete Neanderthal crania ever recovered.
