The 1989 date marks the bicentennial of the Bounty mutiny, which occurred on 28 April 1789 in the waters near Tofua in the South Pacific. Fletcher Christian led the seizure of HMS Bounty against Lieutenant William Bligh, who was subsequently cast adrift in an open boat with 18 loyalists — and navigated nearly 4,000 miles to Timor without losing a man. The Isle of Man issued several commemorative crowns through Pobjoy Mint during this period, capitalizing on anniversary subjects with broad popular appeal.
KM#242 is one of multiple Bounty bicentennial variants from this issuer, with companion pieces struck in silver and gold.
