The 1989 issue commemorates the bicentennial of the Bounty mutiny, which occurred on 28 April 1789 in the waters near Tonga. Fletcher Christian's seizure of the vessel from William Bligh was less a spontaneous uprising than the result of weeks of accumulated grievance following an unusually long stay in Tahiti. Bligh and eighteen loyalists were cast adrift in an open launch and, remarkably, navigated over 3,600 nautical miles to Timor.
The Isle of Man's Pobjoy Mint was prolific with themed crown issues throughout the 1980s, producing numerous commemorative series in both base metal and precious metal strikes for the same reverse designs.
