Issued to mark the centenary of Faraday's death — he died in 1867, making 1996 the 129th anniversary, not the 100th — the Isle of Man has never been particularly strict about commemorative pretexts. The island's prolific Crown program through the 1990s was driven largely by collector market demand rather than historical necessity, with the Pobjoy Mint producing an extraordinary range of silver proofs under Manx licensing that had more to do with numismatic commerce than local heritage.

Faraday was born in Newington Butts, Surrey, and had no documented connection to the Isle of Man.
