Issued in the same year the United Nations designated as the International Year of Disabled Persons, this Isle of Man crown was produced as part of a broader commemorative program marking the 175th anniversary of Louis Braille's birth. Braille died in 1852 having never seen his system officially adopted in France — the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles rejected it during his lifetime, reverting to a sighted-friendly embossed print system before eventually reinstating Braille's method two years after his death.
The 9ct gold proof version, KM#77b, represents the lowest gold fineness typically used in British commemorative issues of the period.
