The Isle of Man has issued commemorative crowns tied to Olympic events since the 1980s, operating outside the constraints of Royal Mint production and with considerable freedom to theme individual pieces within a broader series. This Boxing crown was part of a multi-year rollout ahead of the London 2012 Games, with the same reverse types appearing across the 2009–2011 window as the island's issuing authority, Pobjoy Mint, staggered releases to sustain collector interest across the lead-up years.
Pobjoy Mint, based in Surrey, has struck the Isle of Man's coinage under contract since 1973.
