Additional information

The RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence River on May 29, 1914, after a collision with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad in heavy fog. The death toll of 1,012 made it the deadliest maritime disaster in Canadian history — a figure that has never been surpassed. Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with no airport and a population under 300, issues commemorative coinage as a revenue stream rather than for domestic circulation.
