The Pobjoy Mint struck this crown on behalf of the Isle of Man, one of several commemorative Olympic issues the mint produced around this period as the island aggressively expanded its collector coin program. The 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games are best remembered for the U.S. hockey team's defeat of the heavily favored Soviet squad — the "Miracle on Ice" — though the Games were also shadowed by the broader political tensions following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan two months earlier.
