| Additional information |
This crown was issued as part of Gibraltar's extensive commemorative program marking the bicentenary of the British garrison's formal recognition under William IV, who reigned from 1830 to 1837 and was the last British monarch to actively dismiss a sitting government — a constitutional power unused since. Gibraltar's status as a Crown dependency gave its government unusual latitude to issue commemorative coinage independently of the Royal Mint, resulting in a prolific output of crown-sized pieces throughout the 1990s that far exceeded the territory's actual circulation needs.
