Issued to mark the centenary of George V's 1917 proclamation renaming the British royal house from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor — a direct response to anti-German sentiment during the First World War. The name change was so politically charged that Kaiser Wilhelm II reportedly quipped he looked forward to seeing performances of "The Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha." Gibraltar's Crown series has consistently used these commemorative occasions to produce affordable collectibles in quantity, with gold-plated copper as the standard substrate across dozens of issues in this format.
