Additional information

Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 meant no British coinage bearing his effigy ever entered circulation — the dies were prepared but the coins were never issued to the public. Gibraltar's 1993 commemorative exists partly because of that gap; the island had actually advanced further in its preparations than most territories, making its relationship to the unissued Edward VIII coinage a minor footnote in colonial mint history.

Collectors should note that legitimate struck examples of Edward VIII's intended coinage are extraordinarily rare and held almost exclusively in institutional collections. This issue fills a different market niche entirely.
