Additional information

This piece belongs to a wave of commemorative crowns Gibraltar issued in the early 1990s marking British royals who never appeared on circulating coinage. Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 after less than a year on the throne, having never seen a single coin bearing his effigy enter general circulation — the Royal Mint had prepared dies, but the abdication came before any were released. His refusal to give up Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, forced a constitutional crisis that the British government concluded could have only one resolution.
