| Additional information |
Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, contracting designs through the Pobjoy Mint and others to target the collector market rather than circulation. The James Dean crown belongs to a wave of celebrity-themed issues from the mid-1990s, a period when Gibraltar's Crown Agents–connected issues competed directly with similar products from the Isle of Man and Alderney for the same collector demographic.
Dean died in September 1955 near Cholame, California, forty-one days after completing his role in Giant.
