HMS Sceptre was one of the Royal Navy's Swiftsure-class nuclear submarines, and her connection to Tristan da Cunha is operational rather than ceremonial — the island's extreme remoteness in the South Atlantic has made it a navigational reference point for vessels transiting between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans for centuries. Tristan issued a run of crown-sized commemoratives through this period largely to generate revenue, the island having virtually no other export economy following the collapse of its crayfish processing arrangements.
KM#37 is copper-nickel, the circulation-strike version, though a silver proof was issued concurrently for collector markets.
