Additional information

Harald Hardrada's 1066 invasion of England — defeated at Stamford Bridge on 25 September, just nineteen days before Hastings — is frequently treated as a footnote to the Norman Conquest, though contemporaries would have seen it as the more serious threat. Harald had held the Norwegian throne for over two decades and commanded a veteran force estimated at several hundred longships. His death at Stamford Bridge effectively ended Norwegian ambitions over England.
