HMS Warspite earned more battle honours than any other ship in Royal Navy history — fifteen in total, spanning two world wars. She fought at Jutland in 1916, took a hit from a German radio-guided bomb in 1943 that made her one of the first warships ever struck by a precision-guided weapon, and was present at the Normandy landings the following year. Gibraltar's decision to commemorate her in 1993 coincided with no particular anniversary, which makes the issue feel more like a collector opportunity than a considered historical marker.
Warspite's end was undignified: sold for scrap in 1947, she broke her tow lines in a storm and grounded herself in Prussia Cove, Cornwall — as if refusing the breaker's yard.
