Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with a permanent population of roughly 250, issues commemorative coinage through the British Crown dependencies system primarily as a revenue mechanism — these pieces are legal tender on the island but function entirely as collectibles. Churchill appeared on British coinage during his own lifetime, an honour almost without precedent for a non-royal, when the Royal Mint struck a crown in 1965 following his death. The gold plating on copper-nickel is applied after striking.
