Tristan da Cunha's connection to Cook is geographical rather than ceremonial — the island sits in the South Atlantic, well outside his primary Pacific routes, and Cook himself never landed there. The island was first sighted by Portuguese admiral Tristão da Cunha in 1506 and remained uninhabited until the early 19th century. Tristan issues commemoratives prolifically for the collector market, with almost no domestic circulation given a permanent population that has never exceeded 300.
