The Focke-Wulf 190 was one of the genuine shocks of the air war over Western Europe — when it appeared over the Channel in September 1941, it outclassed the Spitfire Mk V so decisively that the RAF temporarily lost air superiority. The suffix ".2" in the KM reference distinguishes this from the companion prooflike issue, the difference lying in the fuel injection system noted in the title: unlike the Spitfire's early Merlin engines, the Fw 190's BMW 801 radial had no carburetor, meaning it could push into negative-g dives without cutting out.
