| Obverse description | Right-facing draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a tiara and earring, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The peripheral legend reads ELIZABETH II to the upper left and GIBRALTAR to the upper right, with the date 2001 at lower right. The engraver's initials IRB appear on the truncation. A fine beaded border frames the entire design. |

Issued in the centenary year of Nightingale's death, this Gibraltar crown is part of a broader commemorative program the territory ran through the early 2000s targeting the collector market rather than circulation. Nightingale died on 13 August 1910 at age 90, having largely withdrawn from public life decades earlier due to a debilitating illness — now thought by some medical historians to be brucellosis contracted during the Crimean campaign, not the nervous collapse contemporaries described.
