The Isle of Man has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, and this 1997 silver proof marks the 1,521st anniversary of the deposition of Romulus Augustulus by Odoacer — a date that no contemporary Roman would have recognized as the end of anything in particular. The western court had been cycling through puppet emperors for decades, and 476 was largely a bookkeeper's choice, imposed retroactively by later historians, most influentially Edward Gibbon.
KM#801a is the silver version of a base-metal crown struck in the same year, differentiated by composition and finish rather than design.
