This crown is one of dozens of thematic pieces Gibraltar issued in the early 2000s commemorating English monarchs and their residences — a prolific program that flooded the collector market and suppressed secondary values across the series. Hatfield's specific connection here is the Old Palace, where Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood under house arrest and where, in November 1558, she learned of Mary I's death and her own accession to the throne.
