Gibraltar's 1990s crown series leaned heavily on royal and patriotic themes, and this piece was issued to mark the 70th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. Gibraltar's dependency status gives it an unusual numismatic position — it issues its own coinage under Crown authority but is neither fully British nor fully independent, producing a steady stream of commemoratives aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
KM#473 is one of several Gibraltar crowns from this period sharing the same planchet specification as the UK's commemorative issues of the era.
