The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was founded in 1956 by Prince Philip as a structured youth development programme, initially open only to boys before expanding to include girls in 1969. This crown was issued by the Isle of Man under Pobjoy Mint contract to mark the scheme's 25th anniversary. Pobjoy struck commemorative crowns for the Isle of Man prolifically through the late 1970s and 1980s, to the point where many collectors treat the series with skepticism — mintages were rarely constrained by anything resembling scarcity.
