The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, who modeled it partly on the Gordonstoun school program he had attended in Scotland — a program notorious for its physical rigor and cold-water immersion. By 1981, the scheme had expanded to dozens of Commonwealth nations and dependencies, making the Isle of Man's commemorative issue one of several struck across different jurisdictions that year for the Award's 25th anniversary.
