Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, after the effigy by Arnold Machin, occupying the majority of the field. The legend ISLE OF MAN curves along the left periphery and ELIZABETH II along the right, with the date 1981 positioned in the lower exergue. A fine beaded border encircles the design, and the engraver's initials appear discreetly below the truncation.

Additional information

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, who modeled it partly on the Gordonstoun school program he had attended in Scotland — a program notorious for its physical rigor and cold-water immersion. By 1981, the scheme had expanded to dozens of Commonwealth nations and dependencies, making the Isle of Man's commemorative issue one of several struck across different jurisdictions that year for the Award's 25th anniversary.
