The Douglas C-47 — military variant of the DC-3 — earned its place in Isle of Man commemorative history partly through the island's role as a wartime staging and transit point in the Irish Sea corridor. The C-47 was the primary Allied transport throughout the Second World War, most famously dropping paratroopers at Normandy and Arnhem, but its postwar civilian life as the Dakota proved equally durable: some examples remained in scheduled commercial service into the 1990s when this crown was struck.
The 1995 issue falls within a prolific Pobjoy Mint aviation series for the Isle of Man that ran through much of the decade.
