Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, this crown belongs to a flood of commemorative output from the Isle of Man that defined the Pobjoy Mint's commercial strategy through the late 1980s and 1990s. The island's Crown Dependencies status gave it latitude to issue commemoratives largely detached from British monetary policy, a freedom Pobjoy exploited aggressively across dozens of themes and markets.

Columbus himself never commanded a single ship — the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María were under his overall command but individually captained by others, including the Pinzón brothers, whose role in the expedition tends to get buried in the anniversary literature surrounding 1992.
