Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns continuously since the 1970s, and the territory's mint contracts have historically gone to Pobjoy Mint and later the British Royal Mint's commercial partners — producing a volume of themed issues that collectors either embrace or dismiss entirely. This piece falls squarely into that commemorative commercial category, struck twenty-four years after Diana's death in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. Rose gold plating on copper-nickel is a finishing technique that became fashionable in the 2010s as mints sought to differentiate shelf product without the cost of solid precious metal.
