Pobjoy Mint struck this issue for the Isle of Man to commemorate the 1980 Epsom Derby, part of an aggressive commemorative program the mint ran throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s that made Man one of the most prolific issuers of precious metal proofs in that decade. The Derby series was among Pobjoy's more commercially successful lines, sold primarily to collectors rather than through any circulation channel.
At 43 grams of 22-karat gold, this is a substantial piece by any measure — far exceeding the gold content of most contemporary British Commonwealth proofs.
