Additional information

Struck by the Pobjoy Mint on behalf of the Isle of Man, this crown commemorates the 1980 Epsom Derby. The Pobjoy Mint had become the Isle of Man's primary contract minter by the late 1970s, producing a steady stream of commemorative crowns that drew criticism from some collectors for their frequency but found a ready market among thematic collectors and racing enthusiasts. The 1980 Derby was won by Henbit, trained by W. R. Hern and ridden by Willie Carson, after the favorite Nureyev was disqualified following a positive dope test — one of the most controversial results in the race's history.
