Queen Victoria died on 22 January 1901 at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, ending a reign of 63 years and seven months — the longest of any British monarch to that point. Gibraltar, as a Crown Colony, had circulated currency bearing her effigy throughout much of that reign, making the centenary a locally relevant occasion rather than a purely ceremonial one.
KM#916a is the silver variant of a base-metal issue, struck in .925 sterling to the standard 28.28g crown specification that dominated Commonwealth commemorative production throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
