Dan Casement was an Irish unionist politician and army officer — and the brother of Roger Casement, the humanitarian and Irish nationalist who was hanged for treason in 1916 after attempting to secure German arms for the Easter Rising. The two brothers ended up on opposite sides of one of the most fractious political divides in modern Irish history. The Isle of Man's 1992 crown series drew on a broad cast of historical figures connected to the broader British Isles, and the Casement family offered a ready-made study in ideological contradiction.
