The 1984 Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference was held on the Isle of Man — a deliberate choice, as Tynwald claims continuous operation since 979 AD, making it the oldest continuously sitting parliament in the world. Hosting the conference there was a pointed statement about Manx constitutional distinctiveness; the island is a Crown dependency, not part of the United Kingdom, and governs under its own legislative framework entirely separate from Westminster.
