Churchill delivered his "We shall fight on the beaches" speech on 4 June 1940, three days after the Dunkirk evacuation concluded. Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, has issued commemorative crowns under its own name since the 1970s — struck by the Pobjoy Mint and others on contract, with no independent monetary policy or circulation economy to speak of. The coins are legal tender in name only; the island's roughly 250 residents operate largely on a barter and supply-ship basis.
