The 1988 Isle of Man crown series was part of the Pobjoy Mint's prolific run of themed collector issues produced under the island's unusually broad licensing autonomy — the Isle of Man issues its own coinage independently of the Royal Mint, a right exercised with considerable commercial creativity throughout the 1980s. The "Chaperon" subject places this piece within a costume or historical dress theme, one of several such series Pobjoy produced for the island during this decade.
Copper-nickel crowns of this type saw minimal circulation; most were absorbed directly into collector sets.
