The Castle of Mey, a 16th-century Z-plan tower house on the Caithness coast, was purchased by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1952 — the same year her daughter acceded to the throne — after she spotted it derelict and earmarked for demolition. She restored it over decades and used it as a private retreat until her death in 2002, the year this crown was issued. The Isle of Man has long used the crown format as a vehicle for commemorative subjects with Commonwealth royal connections, producing silver versions alongside base-metal strikes for the collector market.
