The Boulton Paul Defiant was one of the RAF's more instructive failures. Designed around a powered turret rather than forward-firing guns, it briefly surprised the Luftwaffe over Dunkirk in May 1940 — German pilots initially mistook it for a Hurricane and pulled up into the turret's field of fire. Once the tactic was understood, losses became catastrophic, and the Defiant was withdrawn from daylight operations by August 1940 after just weeks of front-line service.
The Isle of Man issued an extended aviation series through the 1990s commemorating British military aircraft; the Defiant was among the more obscure selections, reflecting the breadth of the program rather than the type's combat record.
