Pobjoy Mint struck this issue for the Isle of Man in 1988 to mark the Australian Bicentenary — a commemoration that generated an extraordinary volume of licensed merchandise and collector coins worldwide, with mints from Britain to the Pacific competing for the same market. Pobjoy was particularly aggressive in this space during the 1980s, securing Isle of Man authority to produce themed crowns that had no organic connection to the island itself.
The .999 fineness is slightly above the .925 standard Pobjoy used for most crown issues of the period, a deliberate commercial upgrade to attract bullion-conscious buyers alongside collectors.
