Australia's bicentenary in 1988 prompted a wave of commemorative issues from jurisdictions with no direct historical connection to the continent, and the Isle of Man was among the most prolific. The Pobjoy Mint, which has held the Isle of Man coinage contract since 1973, produced an extensive series of crown-sized pieces for the occasion — KM#223 is one of several distinct types within that run, each tied to a different aspect of the 1788 settlement or colonial history.
Copper-nickel strikes of this type were produced in large numbers for the collector market rather than circulation.
