The Isle of Man had no direct stake in American independence, but the Manx government was among the earliest issuers to recognize the commercial potential of commemorative crowns for the collector market — a strategy that would define much of their output through the late 1970s and 1980s. This 1976 issue was produced specifically for that market, not for general circulation, timed to the American bicentennial year alongside dozens of similar issues from Commonwealth territories worldwide.
KM#37 was struck in both copper-nickel and silver proof formats, with the latter commanding most collector attention at time of issue.
